This is How We Ride.
Our Horsemanship Philosophy
At Vista Verde, horsemanship is about far more than getting from point A to point B. It’s about developing a true partnership between horse and rider built on trust, communication, respect, and understanding.
Our program blends authentic ranch riding traditions with thoughtful instruction designed to meet every guest where they are. Whether you’re stepping into the saddle for the first time or refining advanced skills, our goal is to help you become a more confident, capable, and connected rider.
We believe the best riding experiences happen when horses are treated as partners and teachers, not equipment. Every ride, clinic, and hands-on opportunity reflects that philosophy.

Throughout the week, guests often develop a special bond with their assigned horse, gaining a deeper appreciation for the unique personality, strengths, and communication style each horse brings to the partnership.

For the current breeding season, we’ve selected a Drum Horse stallion to bring size, beauty and grace to future herd. Join us on the journey as we watch our foals.

Expert Wranglers
The wrangling team brings decades of combined experience in riding, training, horse care, and guest instruction. Kaulana Papalimu, known as K.P., is trained in the Hawaiian Paniolo tradition and leads a first-rate team of passionate, patient, and experienced riders.
K.P. brings a unique approach rooted in rhythm, respect, and trust. Under his guidance, riding becomes more than a skill—it becomes a shared rhythm between horse and rider, grounded in communication, confidence, and mutual respect.
More than guides, our wranglers are good people, educators, mentors, and storytellers who help guests understand the traditions and skills that define authentic Western horsemanship.
Whether they’re leading a scenic trail ride, teaching a clinic, or sharing stories around the barn, our wranglers create experiences that stay with guests long after they leave the Ranch.

Where Great Rides Lead.
Meals on Horseback
Some of the most memorable moments at Vista Verde happen when a great ride ends with a great meal. Our signature horseback dining experiences combine scenic riding, authentic ranch traditions, and the simple pleasure of sharing food in extraordinary outdoor places.
Steak Ride
A guest favorite for generations, the Steak Ride is a quintessential Vista Verde experience. Riders head out into the mountains on horseback before arriving at a scenic outdoor setting where the culinary team prepares a hearty yet elevated ranch-style meal. It’s an opportunity to ride and dine while enjoying the spectacular views of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness. The Steak Ride isn’t just about the destination – although it is amazing – it’s about the journey, the horses, and a shared meal in Colorado’s high country.
Breakfast Ride
There is something special about saddling up in the crisp morning air and riding toward breakfast. Guests make their way through quiet meadows and forested trails before arriving at the historic Homestead Cabin, where fresh cowboy coffee and a hearty ranch breakfast awaits.
The reward is well worth the ride: freshly baked blueberry muffins, warm croissant breakfast sandwiches, and the peaceful beauty of the valley coming to life. For early risers, the Breakfast Ride may even include a stunning sunrise but all guests experience a memorable way to fuel up before the rest of the day’s adventures begin.
Annual Horsemanship Clinic with KP
Ready to take your horsemanship to the next level? Each October, Director of Horse Operations Kaulana “KP” Papalimu leads an immersive four-night retreat designed for riders who want to go beyond the trail. Working with an assigned horse throughout the stay, guests explore groundwork, saddle work, ranch skills, and progressive training methods rooted in trust, communication, and partnership. Limited to just 10 adult guests, this exclusive annual clinic offers a rare opportunity to deepen your knowledge alongside one of the West’s most passionate horsemen.

Choosing the Right Season.
Planning Your Horseback Vacation
Every season offers a different horse riding experience.
Summer – Long days, mountain wildflowers, and access to high-country trails make summer ideal for families and guests who want maximum saddle time and diverse terrain.
Fall – Cool temperatures, golden aspens, and adults-only weeks create an exceptional environment for riders looking for a quieter and more immersive experience.
Winter – Ride through snow-covered landscapes and experience the quiet beauty of the Colorado Rockies in winter. Adults-only and family weeks, smaller riding groups, and unforgettable snowy trails create a truly unique horseback experience.
Experience Levels Welcome
Whether you’ve never sat on a horse or have spent a lifetime riding, our program is designed to meet you where you are.
Our wranglers carefully match horses and rides to each guest’s ability and goals, creating a safe experience that is both comfortable and rewarding.
What to Bring:
- Comfortable jeans or long pants for riding
- Closed-toe boots with a heel
- Layers for changing mountain weather

Most importantly, bring a willingness to learn and adventure in the American West. The guests who get the most out of their stays are often those who arrive curious and open to new adventures and experiences.
FAQs
Everything You Need to Know
Whether you’re joining us for a week of culinary indulgence or simply wondering what dining at Vista Verde is like, here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
Do I need riding experience to participate?
Not at all. Many guests arrive with little or no riding experience. Our wranglers carefully match each rider with an appropriate horse and provide instruction throughout the week to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
How are horses matched with guests?
We consider riding experience, confidence level, physical comfort, personality, and goals for the week. Finding the right horse-and-rider partnership is one of the most important parts of the Vista Verde experience.
Can experienced riders still be challenged?
Absolutely. Experienced riders have opportunities to develop advanced skills, ride more responsive horses, participate in clinics, and explore more challenging terrain throughout the week.
Will I ride the same horse all week?
In most cases, yes. We believe that spending time with the same horse helps riders develop a deeper connection and understanding. Occasionally, adjustments may be made if a different horse would create a better experience.
What horsemanship clinics are offered?
Clinic offerings vary throughout the year, but often include groundwork, horse behavior, riding effectiveness, ranch riding skills, horse care, and communication techniques. K.P. holds an annual 4-night Horsemanship Clinic every fall season. This is a great way to advance your skills and improve your riding.
Can children participate in the horsemanship program?
Yes. Our youth riding program is designed to help young riders build confidence, skills, and a love for horses in a safe and supportive environment.
How much riding can I do during my stay?
Most guests ride daily, with opportunities ranging from shorter instructional sessions to half-day and full-day trail rides. Your schedule can be tailored to your interests and goals.
What makes Vista Verde's riding program different?
Our focus extends beyond trail riding. We emphasize horsemanship, horse-and-rider partnerships, quality instruction, and authentic Western ranch experiences that help guests become more knowledgeable and confident around horses.
What if I'm nervous about riding?
That’s completely normal. Many guests arrive feeling uncertain. Our experienced wranglers specialize in helping riders build confidence at their own pace and creating positive experiences from the very first ride.
Can I focus primarily on riding during my stay?
Yes. Many guests come specifically for the horsemanship program. Others choose to balance riding with activities like hiking, fishing, mountain biking, or simply relaxing around the Ranch. Your vacation can be as horse-focused as you’d like.

The Vista Verde Difference
Many ranches offer horseback riding. At Vista Verde, we offer something much more meaningful.
Through exceptional horses, experienced wranglers, and a philosophy rooted in partnership, guests gain far more than time in the saddle. They build confidence, develop new skills, and form a genuine connection with their horse. Many guests return year after year not only for the riding, but for the chance to reconnect with a favorite equine friend.
Whether you’re a first-time rider or a lifelong horse enthusiast, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of horsemanship and memories that last long after your final Vista Verde sunset.
