Some vacations end. This one leaves you changed.
Family Vacations at Vista Verde
Families often want more than a week away. They want an experience for all ages where everyone can make lifelong memories, so when they come home, they feel closer, fulfilled, and more connected.
Families who seek connection choose Vista Verde Ranch

Our Family Vacation Philosophy
This is How We Connect
We believe that luxury family vacations are based on the view that the best experiences don’t come with a packed itinerary; they come with space. Space for kids to put the screen away and discover what they’re capable of. Space for parents to slow down and remember who they are beyond the busy schedule. And space for families to finally reconnect, somewhere between Rocky Mountain adventures and the dinner table.
At Vista Verde, the whole family is fully cared for. Everything is all-inclusive, including lodging, meals, activities, and a dedicated kids program that runs parallel with your own adventures. No need to plan around your kids here. Each of you gets your best week, and at the end of the day, you share the day’s adventures around the dinner table. No logistics. No planning. No compromises. That’s why Vista Verde Ranch is continually recognized as a top luxury dude ranch vacation for families by Condé Nast Traveler and USA Today.
Fun for all ages
Every Age Group Has Its Own Adventure
From tots to grandparents, rest assured knowing everyone has an adventure awaiting them. During the summer, Vista Verde’s kids program is in full swing with four individual age groups, each with its own dedicated supervisor–not a rotation of staff, but a consistent person who becomes a friend, role model, and guide. This program is NOT babysitting; instead, kids build real riding skills, real friendships, and real confidence that shines by the end of the week. While your kids are taken care of and thriving, you get to enjoy a real vacation.
PROGRAMS BY AGE GROUP
- Little Buckaroos Program: Ages 3-5
- Kids Program: Ages 6-10
- Tweens Program: Ages 11-13
- Teens Program: Ages 14-18

Multi-Generational Family Vacations
A Place for Reunions
Vista Verde is built for families who span generations. Picture it: Grandparents on the porch of their cabin with coffee and a mountain view that doesn’t require any hiking to reach. Mom and Dad are on a guided trail ride through aspen groves. The grandkids are at the Kids Hut running around with their supervisor. Then at dinner time, everyone’s back around the same table.
Multi-generational family vacations at Vista Verde are designed for this kind of experience. Not the kind where someone is always waiting for someone else to finish, or where one generation silently sacrifices their day for the rest of the group. Here, grandparents, parents, and grandkids each pursue the week at their own pace while reuniting around the best meals, the best stories, and the kind of connection that makes everyone forget how far apart they usually live.
Stays at Vista Verde remove the coordination burden that makes multi-generational family reunions so daunting; that’s why we see multi-gen families return year after year. The Ranch has a way of becoming the answer to “where should we all go this year?” Because it’s the one place where the 7-year-old and the 74-year-old both had the week of their lives.
“Everyone — ages 7 through 74 at the time — said this was one of our most unique and best vacations ever. What I especially appreciate as the one who plans all trips for my family and friends was that I didn’t have to research or plan a single thing other than pick the dates and book the trip.”
– Everyday Adventure Fam Felicia Wong, 2023
Family Dining Experiences
Meals are the centerpiece for reconnecting. Each morning starts with the whole family gathered together for a hearty ranch breakfast before everyone splits up for their own adventures. After morning activities, lunch reunites everyone for a family-style buffet, and everyone is eager to share stories they’ve experienced already. By evening, Vista Verde makes dinner something to look forward to. Most nights, the whole family gathers together around the dinner table. However, on Mondays and Wednesdays, the kids join their supervisors for a Dine & Dash. This is a kid-friendly meal paired with an evening activity, while parents enjoy a white-linen, multi-course culinary experience at our formal dinners.
When we say the food is “ranch-style,” we don’t mean “simple.” It’s award-winning cuisine made with intention and care – tailored for every allergen and preference. All served in a place where no one is rushing to go anywhere.

Family Activities Together
When it comes to family vacations, not every Vista Verde memory happens separately. Some of the best ones happen when the whole family, kids, parents, and grandparents, gets together doing something none of them expected to love.
Barn Dance: Boot-scoot boogie in our barn loft on Tuesday nights, where you learn lessons in swing, square, and line dancing. No experience needed!
Breakfast Ride: On Wednesday morning, instead of having breakfast in our main lodge, your family heads out for a morning horseback ride to our historic Homestead Cabin, where a picnic stocked with frittata, croissant sandwiches, various fruits and muffins, and cowboy coffee awaits.
Steak Ride: A dining experience your family will never forget! A trail ride that leads you to a hillside beneath aspens facing the Zirkel Mountains. There, families are welcomed with drinks, appetizers, and, of course, filet mignon steaks.
Customize Family Brand: Participate in a working ranch tradition that has been done for generations: branding. Your family creates their own unique brand, where you then use hot irons to burn that design onto wooden discs to take home as a memento.
Live Music: At the end of the week, after dinner, your family can enjoy live music from the Farwell Mountain Band (you might even recognize some faces in the band) and show off the new dancing skills you learned from Barn Dance.
These are the experiences that don’t need a photo to survive because your family will be telling them for years to come.
The Measure of a Great Week
Kids Cry When They Leave Vista Verde
Not because the week was long or because they weren’t on their phones. It’s because the friendships they made were real, the horse they rode every day became theirs, and somewhere between the first time saddling up and the last campfire, they became a more confident, capable version of themselves – all without the use of technology. This affirms why we do what we do: making an impact on each guest.
Sure, it might be odd, but that’s how we measure a great week. Knowing that you and your children are leaving feeling renewed, reconnected, and with loads of stories to share, even if some tears are involved, we take that as the highest compliment a family can give us.

Everyone Gets to Have The Best Week
Summer Family Ranch Vacations
The days are long, and the opportunities are endless. Summer is Vista Verde’s full expression of freedom. After enjoying breakfast together as a family, watch your kids rush to join their age group at the Kids Hut for their daily activity as you head off to your own adventure – whether that be a guided fly fishing trip, a trail ride into the Rocky Mountains, wine tasting, or simply relaxing for the first time in months by our pond.
After all activities, your family reunites at meals. You share the day’s stories over dinner and watch your child excitedly talk about their horse and the journey they embarked on together, all while you and your spouse look at each other, knowing that your child’s confidence is higher than ever.
While The Kids are in the Program, Adults Can Enjoy:

When The Family Slows Down Together
Winter Family Vacations
If summer is all about everyone doing their best week, winter is about everyone slowing down into the same one. Winter at Vista Verde is an entirely different rhythm. The mountains are quiet, and the family comes closer. Imagine backcountry skiing with your kids, hot cocoa after a sleigh ride, and evenings by the fire where no one is checking the time.
Winter is when families tell us they felt the connection most deeply. Less doing and more being together – the kind of slow that happens when you’re surrounded by a snow blanket and nowhere else to be.
What Winter Looks Like for the Whole Family:

Backcountry Skiing and Snowshoeing
Guided treks through snow-covered wilderness. Great for all ages and all ability levels.

Winter Horseback Rides
Even during the winter, trail rides remain a Vista Verde staple. Riding through white, snowy trails creates a beautiful contrast to summer meadows.

Sleigh Rides
Classic evening sleigh rides under Colorado skies, straight out of the Hallmark movies.

Downhill Snow Tubing
Spend the afternoon slipping and sliding down our groomed tubing hill with a snowmobile shuttle to the top. No walking uphill necessary!

Ranch Cooking & Wine
Warm evenings, award-winning cuisine, and a Wine Spectator cellar worth exploring.

Winter Adventures
The lodge fire is always roaring, and your family can relax with the ability just to appreciate time together.

FAQs
Everything You Need to Know
Whether you’re joining us for a week of culinary indulgence or simply wondering what dining at Vista Verde is like, here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
Do we need riding experience to come to Vista Verde?
No riding experience is required. The overwhelming majority of dude ranch guests are beginners — most ranches report that 70 to 85 percent of guests have little to no prior riding experience. At Vista Verde, all guests receive a riding orientation and horse matching on arrival day. Rides are organized by pace and experience level, so beginners and experienced riders both get a meaningful experience.
What ages are welcome at Vista Verde, and what do kids actually do?
Vista Verde has children’s programming for ages 3 through 18, with activities specific to each age group. All age groups ride horses and enjoy lake time, pool parties, crafts, games, campouts, and campfires. Kids can also participate in activities with their families at any time. The Buckaroos program (ages 3–5) includes pony rides in the arena rather than trail rides. Teens have their own dedicated program with age-appropriate challenge activities separate from younger kids.
Can my kids join us for family activities, or are they in the program all day?
Both. The kids program typically runs from approximately 9:30 a.m. to noon and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. each day, leaving time for families to pursue activities together. Breakfast and lunch are always served as a family. Some evenings, the kid supervisors host a Dine & Dash dinner with activities for the kids, freeing adults for a quiet formal dinner; other evenings, everyone dines together.
What's actually included in the price?
The all-inclusive rate covers accommodations, all meals and snacks, wine, horseback riding, all instruction and equipment, on-ranch activities, and airport transfers to and from Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN). There are no per-activity charges during your stay.
Is Vista Verde right for multigenerational families–grandparents included?
It’s one of the most consistent use cases we see. Groups spanning ages 6 to 78 have visited Vista Verde and described it as one of the best vacations they’ve ever taken together. The all-inclusive, parallel-programming model means grandparents can move at their own pace while parents and grandkids each have their own experience–and the whole family shares meals and evenings together.
What if my child has never been around horses?
That’s the norm, not the exception. Kids meet their horses on day one in a structured, supervised environment. Vista Verde is home to over 100 horses, and the relationship kids build with their assigned horse across the week is one of the most commonly cited highlights of the entire stay. The program is designed to introduce children to horses safely and progressively, regardless of prior experience.
